ESPN – Joyner: Reputation not always warranted – NFL
So KC Joyner at ESPN put out his list of overrated and underrated wide receivers. Tops on his list was Donald Driver, with Greg Jennings receiving honorable mention. The two starting receivers on the Packers are allegedly getting way too much credit. At least in the case of Driver, there are plenty of unimpressive numbers to back up his case.
Funny thing is, I always thought that to be overrated, you had to first be held in high regard. Pro Bowl voting for Driver aside, how are either of these Packer receivers considered overrated? I can understand if you don’t think they are very good, but saying they are overrated implies that people believe they are great. Greg Jennings gets a fair amount of credit for doing well as a rookie starter when he was never expected to do a ton out of college. Nobody is calling him a rookie sensation like Marques Colston was. Driver gets credit for being Favre’s favorite target… but look at the competition on the team. Everybody knows and is willing to admit that Driver isn’t good enough to carry a team as a star receiver.
Beyond that, I did notice a lot of drops and missed opportunities by Driver and the rest of the Packer receivers last year. I also noticed, that as with the last several years, a lot of those drops came when the receiver was going over the middle and had to turn completely around at full speed to catch a pass thrown well behind them. Or they had to extend themselves up in the air to try and keep an overthrown pass from being intercepted. Sure, the receivers deserve some of the blame, but before you knock production, look at the guy throwing the ball too.
